Residents of Aparri journey out to the sea with their boats adorned beautifully using indigenous and several other materials illustrating the Aramang or the spider shrimp, soft-shelled species that is unique to the town.
Every 11th of May each year, locals of Aparri, Cagayan celebrate a joyful fluvial festival called the Barangay Boat Festival where they showcase their creativity and artistry in designing their boats.
What is Barangay Boat Festival?
The Barangay Boat Festival or Aramang Festival is an annual festival celebrated in honor of Saint Peter Thelmo, the town’s patron saint.
It is also considered as a thanksgiving celebration to saint for all the good things that occurred in Aparri, as well as to have fun and take pride in the residents’ camaraderie.

Every year, the residents of Aparri journey out to the sea with their boats adorned beautifully for the fluvial parade of the Aramang Festival.
A culminating program is usually held to showcase the town’s abundant products. Among the highlights of the celebration is the Fluvial Parade, also known as “Barangayan Sadjay Sabangan” wherein local fisherfolk from different coastal barangays of the town participates in.

Aside from the tradition, the celebration also showcases the artistic and creative sides of the fisherfolk, as they’re the ones who design their boats with indigenous and several other materials illustrating Aramang (Nepatopalaemon tenuipes) or the spider shrimp.
Aramang is a soft-shelled species that is unique to the town of Aparri.
A wonderful celebration
The last Barangay Boat Festival was held last 2018. It went on for a week, starting from May 2 until May 11, 2018.

The culminating activities of the festival included street-dancing competitions, male and female pageants, games and contests, and even concerts as part of the annual celebration to honor San Telmo, who’s also known as the patron saint of sailors.
