The Department of Education announces extension of classes due to observed learning gaps.
The Department of Education (DepEd) announced its adjustment of the academic calendar, moving the last day of the school year from June to July to address learning gaps.
A department order released on March 02, 2021 (Tuesday) explained that based on monitoring by the DepEd, learning gaps were evident and have to be addressed “in order to meet the required essential learning competencies”.
According to DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, the learning gaps are the effects of reduced academic opportunities and a substantial lack of live contact with teachers.
The DepEd added that while the adjustment is applicable to public elementary and secondary schools, private schools, technical institutions, vocational institutions, as well as others are encouraged to implement guidelines.
It is still unclear whether the new policy would lead to a short summer break for students.
